✨ I am so happy; I made my first sale today! ✨
Anytime you sell something, it is exciting, no matter what business you are in. For us small business owners and artisans—especially in the handcrafted niche—that first sale adds an extra spark of happiness.
And when it comes to handcrafted work, there are many kinds of “first sales” along the way: face-to-face at a vendor show, the one that breaks the ice, or online when someone finds their way to your store.
Today’s first sale was a face-to-face moment in real life. Not via the internet, but to someone who knows me personally. Someone who understands how important it is for me to get this venue off the ground, yet is discerning about what he likes and doesn’t like.
He purchased a few of my ornaments, a couple of hand-drawn Greeting Cards from the Chameleon Card Collection, and the Elf hat we had just posted for sale. In my mind, I could almost hear the sweet elf spirit within the threads and yarn squeal with delight.
This particular hat, as I created it, was about feeling mischievous, joyful, playful, and letting your inner magic-maker come out to play. So when he picked it up and chose to take it home—knowing what I know about him—I couldn’t have been more elated. It fits his current journey of becoming, studying, and remembering his authentic self in ways I can’t even begin to describe.
To many, these creations may look like “just handmade items.” But when I craft—regardless of the method or material—there is so much more to it. Each piece is created with intention: powerful, positive, benevolent energy for whoever chooses it or receives it as a gift.
For me, a face-to-face purchase brings additional joy. I get to see the delight in the eyes of the person who found the item that spoke to them. There’s a moment of lighting up inside, and I can feel it in the most pleasant of ways.
Beyond those feel-good moments, there is more at play. Each item I sell reinforces my courage to keep creating. It helps me learn what people are drawn to for themselves or as gifts. It teaches me which items will sell at what price point. And it validates me as a crafter and artisan—that I am doing a good job.
This is huge for me, because I put my heart and imagination into each piece. Yes, some items I can customize and make again, but most are one-of-a-kind. That doesn’t mean I invented them—someone, somewhere may have made something similar—but similar is not the same as identical. No matter what I do, I always add that little bit of extra flair that is uniquely me.
Think of each item as one of my creative children. I take great care in bringing them to the point where they can go out into the world and find their new home. Each piece that leaves my hands and my little sanctuary is sent with love and blessings along the way.
So today, I celebrate a small win that feels huge. Now, on to more creating for future delight, more sales under my belt, and our little Shopify store growing into a place you’ll look forward to visiting again and again.
Have an amazing day, all you beautiful souls—and don’t forget to subscribe to our Owl’s Nest Email List.
